The PANSA Taxi Theatre Project presents I Never Thought You’d Come – theatre performed on the move. What a welcome surprise. We board the vehicle. Tickets, please. We’re told to expect the unexpected. To join in if we want. Do what we like. Sit back, and enjoy the ride!

Public transport is the way to go if you want to see the range of people in this massive city. Arnold aka “Archie the Gaatjie” is our tour guide. He does a marvellous job, maintaining his sense of humour even though he’s interrupted, corrected, and English is only his 10th language.

There won’t be any plot giveaways here – that you’ll need to check out for yourself. The ‘show’ is surprisingly moving. It’s fresh. No fuss. It’s natural and speaks from the heart.

Its humour comes from how real it is, and the novelty (for me) of having theatre performed in a taxi! Well, more a bus. I Never Thought You’d Come reveals the type of human stories and situations we often find around us, or that we try to hide from others in public, or that we might eavesdrop on…

Do you mind your own business? Do you interfere? Do you care?

This is a great piece of site-specific work… A conflation of interactive (if you want) and Invisible Theatre (of Augusto Boal). I Never Thought You’d Come has palpable tension, crafted pace and excellent rhythm, extensive scene changes, and topical issues that need addressing. We all have emotional baggage – do we lug it around with us from point to point, ask someone to share the load, or bury it deep in the cargo hold for no one else to scratch through..?

Don’t be nervous about not sitting in the safe zone of a darkened theatre space. Get out there and get involved in the action. I’m so glad I did. – Sarah Roberson
